The boy's voice change is unique. Voice change can occur any time between the ages of 9 and 15 and can last days or months. Voice change is normal. Frustration is common during the voice change. In a "guy-only" group, boys can “be themselves” and sing in a safe, comfortable environment. In an all-male setting, boys are less self-conscious and singing through the voice change is easier. Research shows that encouraging boys to sing gives them greater confidence in themselves, a sense of accomplishment and pride. Singing, combined with sports and cultural activities, helps boys become disciplined and well-rounded young men.
The boy choir is for boys with emerging or changing voices in grades 7 and 8.
Boys whose voices have not changed are encouraged to register for SYS and rehearse on Tuesdays 7 - 8 pm.
Interested boys should come on Tuesday, January 22 at 8:00 pm for a free vocal assessment to determine if the voice is unchanged (can sing in "high" voice), changed (use of low voice), or emerging (low voice is starting to occur).
Rehearsals start on Tuesday, January 29, 7:45 - 8:30 pm. Rehearsals will overlap with SYS rehearsals by 15 minutes so that the 2 groups can work together on a song.
Boys will be taught to understand their changing voice through the production of healthy singing. Boys will have fun working together while learning proper vocal technique, posture, breathing, tone production. Each boy will receive individual attention to develop his changing voice.
$75 for rehearsals Jan 29- Apr 30. Please write a check payable to PACC (Plainfield Area Community Chorus).
The Boy Choir is free for boys who have registered for SYS. These boys rehearse from 7 - 8 pm and are welcome to stay an extra 30 minutes for Boy Choir.
